Preparing for Championships Weekend

If you are an experienced swim team parent, you know the drill.  For those new to the team, here are some helpful things to consider:

  • Close to 1,000 kids will be at this meet.  Keep in mind that we'll have 9 teams all competing at the same time.  If this is your first time, the sheer number of swimmers and fans can be overwhelming to some.  If your child is young, you might want to set some ground rules for them so you can keep track of them.
  • Keeping track of event numbers is important.  With so many swimmers, a single event could last anywhere from 5 minutes to 30-40 minutes depending on the number of swimmers.  Your swimmer will wait in the "Clerk of Course" (basically a holding pen) prior to lining up to swim.  Their wait time could be up to an hour in some cases.
  • Keep yourself and your swimmer hydrated.  Drink lots of water, especially if the weekend is hot.  Dehydration happens without warning.
  • Swimmers will be at the location all day long.  Their days start with warm up swims very early and do not end until their last event.  This means some kids are at the pool from 7 AM - 5 PM.
  • Food is available for purchase at the various locations.  The concessions are run by the swim team that hosts the day so any proceeds benefit their swim team.  In 2010, Euclid hosted a day and benefited greatly from our efforts to keep costs reasonable for the swimmers.  We raised approximately $8,000 that continues to benefit our swim families.  You can obviously bring your own food.
  • Parking may prove challenging.  If you pack a day's worth of 'stuff' for your swimmer(s) and yourself, you could be carrying it for a good distance.  Be prepared.
  • Many families make a day of it.  We commune in an assigned location with pop-up tents, chairs, coolers and various things to keep busy.  Kids bring board games, books or whatever to pass the time between races.
  • Have fun.  Almost every swimmer looks at these weekends as a great time with friends and family.  For parents and other siblings, visit with people you know, or introduce yourself to other families to make new friends.
